The End
As the credits roll on this successful six-part installment of the August 1966 Estes Park Telephone Book (provided I am allowed to post the remainder in its entirety below, oh, and by the way, Greig Steiner and Bill Vaughn, come on down), I want to go back to the potential quandary posed at the end of Act II - What if there are more entries than the restricted pool of telephone numbers can provide?
Here's some interesting figures: The total number of entries for telephone numbers beginning with 586-3XXX (where X is any single-digit number between 0 and 9) is 1067, and the total number of entries for telephone numbers beginning with 586-4XXX is 1015. As mentioned earlier, this is technically "impossible", because the total number of distinct numbers extractable from the 586-3XXX "pool" is 1000, and similarly for 586-4XXX. So what gives? While it seems like both 586-3XXX and 586-4XXX entries are full to overflowing, look more closely at the breakdown by blocks of 100
Number Max "allowed" count=100
586-30XX >100
586-31XX >100
586-32XX >100
586-33XX 63
586-34XX >100
586-35XX >100
586-36XX >100
586-37XX >100
586-38XX >100
586-39XX >100
586-40XX >100
586-41XX >100
586-42XX >100
586-43XX >100
586-44XX 75
586-45XX >100
586-46XX >100
586-47XX 96
586-48XX 100
586-49XX 99
Not only are most number blocks of 100 over their mathematic allotment, but, for some strange reason, 586-33XX and 586-44XX are well under theirs. So the distribution is both impossible and wacky. If phone numbers had been assigned randomly, all clusters of 100 should be maxed out. Let's dispense with the non-mystery so we can get to the interesting stuff. There are more entries than numbers allowed because some entries appearing multiple times throughout the telephone book use the same number. The obvious example of this is the Stanley Hotel (586-3371) which appears in the phone book both where it should, under the S's, and where its marketing department wisely placed it as well, under the H's, in the inverted form Hotel Stanley. But less obvious, and more enthralling (or mysterious) examples are peppered throughout. Three different, apparently unrelated, individuals (potentially living in the same cottage or house) provided 586-3889 as their telephone number, and because the last name of one of them begins with an S (Seale), and the last names of the other two begin with W (Weiser and Witherspoon), this "Caller I.D." back-extraction can only be unearthed quickly by computer.
Much more interesting, though, and more difficult to explain, is the apparent avoidance of telephone numbers beginning with 586-33 and 586-44. It would seem these numbers wouldn't have been any harder to dial (leading to multiple missed calls if people got nervous after dialing the number incorrectly the first time and gave up) on a rotary phone than any other number, and I wouldn't see how telephone circuitry would require these numbers to always be underpreferred, and the last numbers grudgingly assigned as available slots began to fill up. My guess is, again based on an inside knowledge of the Stanley Hotel, is that the remaining 586-33XX and 586-44XX numbers were unlisted. I don't know if they were purposefully given to businesses and residences who wanted an unlisted number, or if this just happened to be the series of numbers still unassigned when the Stanley Hotel, for example, said, "We don't just want the number 586-3371, we want the numbers 586-3372, 586-3373, 586-3374, etc., so that if someone misdials the final digit, they will still reach us." The Stanley Hotel management, just prior to going bankrupt (probably from having to pay for all these extra lines) in 1968 (and again in 1975) was a group of smart cookies.
Bottom line is, it will be interesting to compare this phone book (which seems to represent Estes Park reaching its limit as far as remaining numbers available for new customers in the 586-3XXX and 586-4XXX range) to later 1960s phone books, to see how Estes Park handled the assignation of new numbers. Did the very wide open 586-9XXX numbers became the go-to for not just businesses, but residences as well, did untapped 586-2XXX or 586-5XXX pools open up, or did we instead create the new 577 prefix as we have now, to allow for 10,000 new possibilities?
Stop! You're making my brain hurt!!! |
