Frank talks of civil discourse

Image
Yet can't find time in his calendar for people who disagree with him. It's painfully obvious Frank doesn't like African Americans It took him a year to admit to and correct a simple error in a pamphlet, a factual error that could have and should have been corrected in one minute.  How much civil discourse do you get in an operating room when you step up and remove the wrong kidney?  How much civil discourse should you expect from a family when you tell them their father or mother died because you accidentally left a pair of forceps in their abdomen? One year to admit a little mistake.  Imagine how long it might take for him to admit a big one.  As I remember, the town hired him, and the taxpayers pay him, to be town administrator, not supreme wizard and etiquette arbiter. Frank seems like someone who only tolerates hearing from those with his same opinion, as if they were lockstep, um, brainwashed initiates into his boys club.  It's sure easy to dispense advice

will be confirmed, and William T. Parke is still being honored with a pika.  It's not that we don't believe the women or young girls, it's just that we have to balance their stories against the way the world works, which is men get to grind against women, and always have been allowed to grind against women, whether the women wanted it or not. The sun rises in the east, the earth turns on its axis.  Nothing has really changed, the men in power continue to be the men in power, whether or not they tell the truth the whole truth or simply because they got power handed to them by other men and enjoy being in power The local hospital board is not actually qualified to be the hospital board, there just aren't any good alternatives.  The hospital CEO isn't really qualified to be the hospital CEO, it's just he agreed to toe the line and keep the bodies buried.  If he was any good, his last stop wouldn't have been in Ditchweed, New Mexico, but what are you going t

Let's face it

If you are a developer in Estes Park, you hold all the cards.  You get to speak first at the appeal, you get to speak as long as you want, you can trot up every single person you are paying to snowjob the trustees on the project, and eventually win by attrition, even if the project is misguided, illegal, ugly, causes more problems than it "solves", or is simply designed in poor taste. Until some developer proposes building a adult book store inside the Catholic Church, the town board is going to approve anything and everything that comes before them, regardless of whether the planning commissioners deny the same development proposal unanimously or by a split vote.  And even in the example provided, if the developer of the adult book store is willing to speak long enough and prepare a semi-amateurish Power Point, they have the floor until the end of time, and three of the current trustees will fall asleep or lose interest halfway through anyway, and Ron Norris would approv

Have room for "hundreds" of pikas?  We don't want to lose this opportunity to honor a real sicko like William T. Parke.

I don't agree with Dahlia Lithwick's conclusions, but I do agree with this paragraph

Image
"...Neither politics nor journalism are institutions that can evaluate and adjudicate facts about systems in which powerful men use their power to harm women." Like William T. Parke harming Margaret Baldwin?  And the newspapers at the time choosing to not only keep her anonymous, but essentially render her, and her abuse, non-existent?

And the Leslie pika will go just outside of Channel 8 headquarters

Kids, d'ya wanna have some fun while your folks are shopping in downtown Estes Park?  Why not search for a pika named after a powerful man who harassed and assaulted multiple women?  Let's call it the "Moonves".  Why should Billy Parke be the only alleged sex offender included in the pika search?  Why should he be sitting out there on his perch (watching the kids play) all by his lonesome?  Now let's just keep this a secret between you and the town staff who approved this, okay?

So was it 14 years again?

When you can predict what people will say or do in a situation prior to them saying or doing it, you have a situation where either (a) you are able to see into the future or (b) they are dumber than an insect.  Take your pick on this one.  Is there some kind of subliminal message Betty is trying to send.  Does one of the trustees have a 14-year-old heroin addiction?  Are they supposed to put down good money on a 14-point underdog?

Is it time to put down the Scottish-Irish Festival?

Or the Scot Fest, as the mayor "correctly" referred to it? This year's parade started 20 minutes late, was viewed by fewer than 2500 people, and was 30 minutes of action packed into 40 minutes of forced joviality, flop sweat, and despair. The vast majority of clans were represented by fewer than ten people (when there used to be clan turn-out enough to fill a 53-man roster), there were only eight dogs (not eight dog breeds, eight total dogs) representing "Dogs of the British Isles" (where there used to be hundreds), four bands which traveled any significant distance (and none larger than 30 members), one minor dignitary (remember when the parade included the "Ambassador of Whales" [sic]), and no energy. [As an aside, here is how to spell "aerospace".  It's one word, not two.  I recognize the people in charge are mostly high-school educated, but remember that at least a few members of your audience went on to community college.]

60% is the new 80%

A milestone was reached today with a fairly nondescript postcard: "Rock Portals on the Trail Ridge Road", Sanborn R-866, a pedestrian view of the Rock Cut post-1932, pushed me into second place all time for total different number of Sanborn R-series postcards assembled (in the set that runs from R-750 to R-1785).  Only long-time collector Bobbie Heisterkamp presumably has more (her list is not a matter of public record, but she owns more rare R-series views than me from postcards chosen to illustrate her book, and I'm going to give her the 320 common views that anyone serious about collecting Sanborns could find without much effort). The second column is me, the third column is Sanborn HQ.  You would think Sanborn HQ would have the capability of assembling a complete set of Sanborn R-series postcards (1034 different numbered views produced between 1933 and 1953), since they had access to all of them, but apparently they didn't bother collecting them or saving th

Betty Hull's "Bye Felicia" moment

Poor Betty Hull.  Poor, poor Betty Hull.  Has advanced stage cancer-related treatment (?) on top of having to jet around the world, on top of having to keep all the other planning commissioners in a tight circle (minus Frank Theis, who is behind everything, including mesothelioma and the overuse of opioids and probably the mass graves in Veracruz), like a goat herder tending her flock.  Betty, how many years did you tirelessly, thankslessly serve again?  Was it fourteen?  Did I read somewhere (everywhere, in every letter your write to the commissioners) that it was 14?  Enjoy your early retirement.
