It's not like Italy was distracting us on purpose

There were, and still are, legitimate concerns about Italy toppling over into random mass casualties.  But we should have kept one eye on Spain.  Interesting aside:  Spain referred to the 1918 outbreak as the "French Flu".

Italy and Spain have similar health care systems, similar distrust of government dictates.  And now the death toll in Madrid is rising, ominously.  Of course, in a few days, none of this will matter, we will be focused entirely on the U.S., but it just shows that you can't even learn from your neighbors, because of language and cultural barriers.  Thank God we get along so well with Mexico.
