Some day, we'll look back at these numbers

and cry.  Right now, they are just meaningless cuneiform slashes, like Thai currency swings over the past six months or production numbers from a South Carolina Audi plant for those without the slightest knowledge of automobile manufacturing.  Because we are numbed to them, those of us paying attention, and because most people aren't paying the slightest bit of attention.

During the downhill time, when Omicron came along as a gift, when the anti-maskers (who if they believed nothing else about science, started parroting endlessly how "mild"Omicron is) were given a gift, we are doing no better, and certainly by case counts much worse, than last January.  We have better treatment plans and more experience with how to treat COVID-positive folks entering the ICUs, yet we are still losing over 2000 people in the U.S. each day.  EACH DAY.  With all the testing we should be capable of (but aren't, because testing itself is derided as meaningless, but in reality, is just ignored along with everything else), with all the vaccines we very definitely have, we should be down to double digit deaths by now.  Like 20.  Like all the other civilized nations who have the ability to read and comprehend and act like something other than savages.  We should be coasting out of this and worrying about the midterms.

What gives, and why have we stopped making COVID the most important news story leading off the morning report each and every day?  2000 people are dying every day in the U.S. of a disease that is easily preventable and we have over twenty months of "boots on the ground" experience getting a very firm grip on.  Imagine if more people than already stopped caring months ago actually stopped caring, threw in with the lunatics, who cannot be convinced, and leave instructions with their families to continue crying "hoax" long after they are dead.  Boggles the mind.
