Tie a yellow ribbon

I don't know if Estes Park has many  old  oak trees, but if you truly do care  about  the  current hospital mess, the board  meeting  is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.  today  (Monday, March 26, 2018) in the  Timberline conference  room.   Will we see  you there,  or  do you  complain  just for  show,  and make  yourself  seem all  powerful  from  behind  a curtain?

When's the last time you paid $100/pound for anything ingestible?

Cocaine excepted?  This is wagyu beef, nay, this is a wagyu katsu sando (katsu for cutlet, based on the way it's prepared, sando short for sandowichi, a Japanese sandwich).  Of which only 3 are made per day at this particular location (of which two to two-and-a-half on average are likely consumed by a staff member's pet).  Of which they are sold (if ever) on a first-come, first-served basis.  (Bob Fixter is working on adding ingredients to upcharge this much per cinnamon roll.)  Note:  This meat is prepared by deep frying.  Why hasn't it caught on yet at state fairs? If I'm paying $85 for six crudite-sized slices of a prime rib sandwich, I'm for sure getting the crusts.  Bring me the crusts, waiter/peasant.  Here is your $17 tip for dropping off a glorified congealed raw muscle sample. Food porn video here, except I'm not getting anywhere close to the same warm feelings I get from the one below, which is branded ASMR (Autonomous Sensory M...

Coming into the homestretch, it's Penguin Half-Nelson by a nose Blame the Facebook controversy for Estes residents becoming very hesitant to release personal details (or what they perceive as personal details).  It took almost 450 phone calls this weekend to registered voters to find 200 people willing to respond to our two-question poll:  (1) Are you a registered voter in the town of Estes Park (or simpler question, if they were unsure or evasive:  Did you receive a ballot in the mail for the upcoming town board election?) and (2) Who out of this group of candidates are you likely to vote for, maximum three (in many cases, when we found friendly adults at the other end of the line, this was just responded to by "Here's who I already voted for.") So the disclaimer this go-round is, because of the large number of people who refused to participate, the results may reflect an overabundance of anti-establishment folks.  Remember, the county (or whoever handles th...

And that includes Samsung smart phones

Let discharged dogs lie So last night. embarking on my "One Week of Walking Everywhere" tour to help our environment (take that, Tom Street), I ventured from my house to the YMCA.  It was around 7:00 p.m., but still very much light, (because we just entered daylight savings time, remember?), when, near Rock Mount cottages on the south side of the road, I came across a Samsung cell phone, and about 5 feet west, the protective phone cover for the same unit.  If I had to guess, from the location, someone left their cell phone on the hood or top of their vehicle, and then, making the turn from a side road, forces of the turn overcame friction, and the phone slid off, causing contents in cover to strike the gravel and chatter for a short distance, ejecting said contents,  This is entirely conjecture, and very much denied by the owner of the telephone, but I'm getting ahead of myself. The phone still had 14% battery charge, and while I'm not familiar with the Samsung...

Last week, well before the Sweet 16 got underway, I told you Michigan and Duke would be playing in the final game.  Michigan has already essentially punched their ticket into the championship (midnight, Loyola, midnight is fast approaching) and Duke will whomp the Jayhawks later today to fulfill their half of destiny.  The only thing that might give you pause is Villanova's dominant march through the Eastern region of the bracket thus far, but they got the benefit of not having to face a beat-up Purdue (well, a beat-up Purdue wouldn't have given them any problem, but the Purdue team of two months ago would have been interesting), and you weren't stuck in traffic listening to them get beat by Creighton less than a month ago.  Duke won't tolerate getting this far and not getting a chance to play in the final game. Mark my words.  And then buy on the dip if the market opens significantly lower Monday.  Why do I end up giving this insight away for nothing?  ...

In the future, they will analyze the strategies of successful Ebay bidders like they do chess grandmasters or international bridge players (or Phil Ivey, who cheats).  Unless you are actually bidding, you don't realize the strategy that goes into it, and when you look at the recap, it just sits there flat on the page unless you understand the drama behind the numbers. Perhaps they'll make a reality show someday focusing on the top Ebay bidders and stream it on Netflix.  In the meantime, here is one of the more interesting threeways that unfolded near the end of an auction today. First, some preliminaries.  This is Fern Lodge in Rocky Mountain National Park.  (Everyone calls it "Fern Lake Lodge" now, but I tend to respect and adhere to the name a structure or business was initially assigned by its builder/owner, rather than the default lazy historians assign to it after it is long gone.  Yes, ultimately, Fern Lodge was called Fern Lake Lodge (by someone, who...

Take the simple starter ingredient "Get off my lawn" and see how it can be worked into thousands of time-wasting T-shirts and fake motivational posters: Somehow, this bit of nonviolent resistance also ranks high on a "Get off my lawn" search: In what state do ferns grow this high?
