Total Recall

I don't have the numbers in front of me, but it was around 1300 yes to 900 no, with 1100 people voting for Eric Blackhurst.  I was completely wrong about a large turnout (around 50% of the registered voters) being indicative of silent support finally manifesting itself.  I feel horrible for Cody, and mystified by the support that never materialized.  Cody was done a disservice by his supporters' passivity and timidity and by the ease of conflating a local issue with national politics.  In contrast, the opposition did a very effective job of campaigning, with more energy and better planning and a more effective use of social media and the free press.  By every proxy measure - letters to the editor, FB likes ("Congested Estes" versus "True Grit"), website updates, cheating to win a meaningless newspaper poll, they just worked harder, and motivated their rank and file better.

Apres moi, le deluge.  Sit back and hold on, Estes Park, because as I said six months back, nothing stirs the base (or demonstrates the decline of a base that can't respond to shock) like unexpected results, or people overreaching on what unexpected results actually mean.

Here is what I do know:  Estes Park is now the city of recalls.  Prepare for at least one more six months after the next election.  And prepare for fireworks at the next League of Women Voters forum.  Yes, black Mountaineer driver in the Safeway parking lot on Monday, I do know who you are, and you sure as hell know who I am.

    The citizens of Estes Park have spoken. They've decided that ethics DO matter and are a forefront for ALL elected officials to follow.

    Gotcha. What crime will Cody be charged with after he leaves office, and will the town appoint an ombudsman or pastor to make sure remaining trustees are ethically pure? What if a trustee was formerly married and divorced? Would this disqualify them from holding office? What if they had a child who committed a felony and spent time in prison? Would this disqualify them from holding office?

According to the IMDb website, some portion of the movie Hostiles was filmed in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Does this look like Pagosa Springs? The movie is gorgeously shot, and the locations are breathtaking.  Being somewhat familiar with Pagosa Springs, though, I'm having trouble matching any of the exteriors with anything within a 10-mile radius of Pagosa Springs. According to IMDb The railway station at Chama, New Mexico served as the stand-in for Butte, Montana.  Chama is about 50 miles away from Pagosa Springs, and Pagosa Springs definitely sent some of its own down to Chama to serve as extras, one of whom is currently pedaling coal from the Chama location on Ebay. The Estes Park Economic Development Corporation (EPEDC) is patting itself on the back because "the award for 'Small Community of  the Year' was presented" to them by the Economic Development Council of Colorado (EDCC) "on behalf of a town that sets its sights on building a more resilient, inclusive, and vibrant community and economy after recovering from the devastating Colorado floods in 2013." Jeez we have a bunch of milquetoast pretend journalists in town. The guy who was arrested locally a few clicks back, Keaton M.A. Krell, is the same guy who sexually assaulted a bunch of underage females in Linn County, Kansas, and, brazenly, got away with it. The airtight connection is through his wife or ex-wife or whoever star pupil and non-profit wunderkind Candace Krell is. But even then, c'mon, how many folks named Keaton M.A. Krell are running around diddling little girls? Get some cojones, POR (paper of record) and POR (podcast of record). You did the work (sort of) now publish the findings. Stop hiding behind the town as an excuse to avoid going to press - the PIO and TA aren't going to give you anything because they are scared of their own shadows.
