May leaves in June
This was designed by an immigrant |
The UK voted three years ago to leave the European Union, and the minority has fought tirelessly ever since then to prevent majority rule. If a second referendum is held, it will likely overturn the first vote. Imagine the precendent this will set - Election night in America will actually be election week, with a best two out of three ballot counts after the initial vote, or perhaps best of seven, like the NBA playoffs.
Majority rule used to be a basic, accepted tenet of democratic governments, but no more. I'm not against extending rights to the minority, or allowing them to yell all they want and claim unfairness, including using the court system to seek redress, but at some point, voting results are voting results, and the current sci-fi exercise in Washington seems to be "how can we create and live in a parallel universe where the results of 2016 were reversed"?
Perhaps at some point adults will take control of the room, but how does a "she's drunk" video or "he's insane" press conference further political discourse, or get us anywhere closer to solving the immigration problem? Maybe we don't really have a border problem or a North Korea problem or a trade problem or a health care problem, maybe we have plenty of time to spin our wheels and attack the other side using as many different synonyms for "crazy" as the thesaurus holds.
But I do hope when a real problem arises, we can stop with the "you may be the majority, but we are smarter/prettier/better funded" nonsense and actually buckle down and get to work. Lawyers are wonderful, but how many will be litigating the end of the world and complaining to the sun about unfairly burning out, rather than pursuing
